Derek vs Derek at Saffron Screen, 7 November

Saffron Screen’s poster for the documentary Derek vs. Derek, Saturday 7 November, 2.30pm. A photograph shows two farmers side by side at a metal field gate, one with a white beard and a tan cap, the other in a blue cap, leaning on the gate. The text says that in the heart of Devon two neighbouring farmers share the same name but have very different ideas about the future of farming: one believes in intensive agriculture, the other is creating an oasis for nature. Tickets are on sale from www.saffronscreen.com and the Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre.

‘Derek vs Derek’ is coming to Saffron Screen! For Uttlesford, with its rich farmland, nothing could be more appropriate.

It is the story of two neighbouring farmers at loggerheads: one is passionate about wildlife and healthy ecosystems; the other is committed to intensive farming and providing plentiful food, using artificial fertilizers and the most efficient means possible.

It is a debate that is raging around the country. Should we work with nature, enriching our soil and biodiversity even if less food is produced? Or should we maximise production, keep food as cheap as possible, even if nature suffers and we become more dependent on imported fertilizers?

It’s a film that really only the British can make, with deep characterisation, dramatic tension, frayed tempers and animal chaos. However, I am told that there is a genuinely heart-warming ending. Isn’t that what we all need?

Agriculture is changing, whether we like it or not, and we will all be affected. In Derek vs Derek we witness farmers talking about farming, informed by their love of what they do, and, deep down, in the end, respecting each other’s positions.

I can’t wait!

Derek vs Derek is at Saffron Screen on Saturday 7 November at 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale from the Saffron Screen website and the Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre.
