Underwhelming Action by Essex Climate Action Commission

‘The proposals by the Essex Climate Action Commission are underwhelming, to say the least,’ says Edward Gildea, candidate for Saffron Walden.

After working on the issue for over a year, there are still glaring gaps.

Fossil fuel industries left high and dry

‘They propose ‘encouraging large businesses to address climate change’, with a logo or a badge for those who make an effort. This falls dismally short of the just transition that is needed to a zero-carbon economy!’

In Uttlesford we are hugely dependent on Stansted Airport for jobs, but aviation is now to come within the government's target of reaching 80% reduction in GHG emissions by 2035. That will mean a huge reduction in air travel and with it, massive redundancies.

We need to plan new industries for those employees, not leave them jobless as we did to our coal miners and steel workers in the 80's and 90's. Are we going to become a leading CLT manufacturer? Build modular eco-homes? Manufacture vaccines? Develop new technologies to retrofit existing homes more efficiently? Pioneer battery technology?

Essex needs a strategy to encourage and develop sustainable industries and commerce for a post fossil fuel world.

Vote Green for jobs and prosperity in a post fossil fuel Essex!
